Second Year Economics question on division of labor?

I was reading my economics textbook and it said that total real wage paid to labor is MPL (marginal product of labor) * L and that total return paid to capital owners is MPK*K. I don't understand why you have to multiply MPL and L to get total real wage. Please explain why. Thank you it is greatly appreciated.
