Why doesn't baseball include an extra wild card team?

i don't understand mlb's thinking on not including 1 more team in the playoffs from each league. Then the 2 wild card teams could have a 3 game series (essentially a playoff) while the division winners get a bye in the first round. would be much more exciting and would generate more rev for the league.
